How to Pen Pigs
Pigs are hard to contain because they like to root. They are also sensitive animals that can become easily diseased by bacteria built up from filth. Although there is the expression 'filthy as a pig sty,' pigs are actually clean animals. They tend to defecate in one area and sleep in another. Penning pigs keeps them from rooting out of their surroundings, keeping things clean for their comfort and health.

1
Find an area where you want to set up a permanent pen for your pigs. Flatten this area and set it up for a concrete foundation.
-
2
Pour a concrete floor that will be the foundation for the pen that is at least 3 inches thick. Create it so that the concrete slopes slightly in one direction to have the urine and other manure drain in one direction.
-
-
3
Surround the foundation with a cinder block wall that is approximately 3 feet high to keep the pigs from being able to root their way out. Fill in every crack with caulk and cement to cover any spots where bacteria can fester.
-
4
Add shelter to the pen by using sheet metal arched and supported by a few poles. Pigs need shelter from extreme weather and the heat.
-
5
Designate an area of the pen where there will always been fresh water for the pigs. Keep this near the top of the concrete slope where the pigs will sleep rather than at the bottom near the waste.
-
6
Bed the pen every day so that you can clean the pen on a daily basis to keep the smell down. This will also help with the comfort of the pig, as they like to root around, and will have the bedding to sleep on.
