How to Adopt a Kitten From PetSmart

Save

Adopting a kitten from PetSmart helps to find homes for kittens from neighboring adoption centers. Thousands of local adoption centers provide the kittens for adoption at PetSmart. A portion of your adoption fee is paid to the partner's shelter to help save another pet's life and invest in your community.

Adoption Process

After you choose a kitten from a PetSmart Charities adoption center, you can expect to have an interview with a representative from the kitten's local adoption center. The representative will ask you some questions to make sure you are a good fit for a kitten. You can learn about the medical history, the kitten's personality and habits.

You will fill out an application for the representative to review and if approved, pay the adoption fee for your new kitten.

Some adoption organizations that work with PetSmart Charities require a background check and could require a home visit to ensure you and the new kitten are a good match. This may take time to complete before you take your kitten home. Some adoption organizations allow you to take your kitten home on the same day. Ask which PetSmart locations in your area allow same-day adoptions, if you want to take avoid the wait.

Find an Adoptable Kitten

The PetSmart Charities website posts the upcoming adoption events at PetSmart stores near you. Attend the event to see the kittens in person and choose one for yourself.

You can view adoptable kittens online from the Adopt a Pet tab on the PetSmart Charities home page. You need to enter your ZIP code, check the cats box and enter your preferences of gender, age and the distance of a store from you. Click on the thumbnail photo of a cat you are interested in to view several photos and see a kitten's personality traits and medical history as well as schedule an appointment to see the kitten.

Tip

    • The adoption process may vary slightly from one adoption
      center to another.
    • Allow 30 minutes to 2 hours for your interview and
      application for a new kitten.
    • Check with your local PetSmart for the hours and days the adoption events are available.
