How to Convert an AVI File With WinAVI

WinAVI is a high-speed video converter that supports converting to and from most popular video formats, including AVIs, MPEGs, MOVs, WMVs and DVDs. Note that WinAVI does not actually burn a playable DVD, but rather converts to the proper DVD formatting so you can burn it later with third-party software. Although this is a high-speed conversion program, allow up to several hours for your AVI to convert, depending on your computer's processing speed.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch WinAVI and click the "Add Files" button at the bottom of the screen. Locate the AVI file on your computer in the pop-up search screen. Highlight its icon and click "Open."

    • 2

Choose an output format in the "Destination Type" window. For general conversions to popular formats, look in the "Common Video File" sub-menu. You can also choose a preset for "Popular Devices," "Apple Family" and "Game Consoles." For DVD authoring, click the "DVD/VCD" icon and select the "DVD" tab. Click "OK."

    • 3

Click the "Encoder" tab in the upper left-hand side of the screen. Press the "Advanced..." button on the right side of the screen to open a pop-up window with more specific encoding options, if needed.

    • 4

Select the "NTSC" option if converting to a DVD for the United States, or "PAL" if converting for a European disc. Click "OK" when you are finished with any advanced settings to return to the main screen.

    • 5

Click the "Browse..." button in the middle of the screen to choose a save location on your computer for your converted file(s). Name your file and click "OK."

    • 6

Press the "Start" button at the bottom of the screen to begin the conversion.

Tips & Warnings

  • Feature-length movies can be rather large, depending on the format you are converting to. If converting to a DVD file structure, make sure you have at least 4.7 GB of space on your hard drive, as this is the normal size of an average DVD disc.

  • Free versions of this software will contain watermarks on your video output. Remove these by purchasing the software.
