How to Convert an AVI File With WinAVI
WinAVI is a high-speed video converter that supports converting to and from most popular video formats, including AVIs, MPEGs, MOVs, WMVs and DVDs. Note that WinAVI does not actually burn a playable DVD, but rather converts to the proper DVD formatting so you can burn it later with third-party software. Although this is a high-speed conversion program, allow up to several hours for your AVI to convert, depending on your computer's processing speed.

Tips & Warnings
Feature-length movies can be rather large, depending on the format you are converting to. If converting to a DVD file structure, make sure you have at least 4.7 GB of space on your hard drive, as this is the normal size of an average DVD disc.
Free versions of this software will contain watermarks on your video output. Remove these by purchasing the software.
