The Porta Nailer 401 was a multi-use nailer produced by Porta-Nails, Inc. This model was capable of using standard nails ranging in size from 3/8-inch to 33/32-inch. The nailer could also handle face nails for tongue and groove hardwood flooring installation. The standard components of the model included the nailer, hammer, extension handle and wrench set. The model could be adjusted for single or multi-hit settings and could be used with a magazine for continual use. Instructions for the use of the Porta Nailer 401 are included in the following steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Safety glasses or goggles
  • Porta-Nails face nails
  • Putty stick
  • Put on safety glasses or goggles.

  • Place two tongue and groove boards on the floor and align them so the inside board is parallel to the wall edge and spaced approximately 1/4-inch from the wall. Position a face nail at the edge of the first board closest to the wall. Hammer the nail until the head is flush with the board surface.

  • Position a face nail at the opposite edge of the first board and drive it until the head is flush with the board surface.

  • Position a face nail at the edge of the second board farthest away from the wall. Hammer the nail until the head is flush with the board surface.

  • Use the putty stick over the head of the face nails to blend them with the boards.

  • Position the 401 along the free edge of the second board and strike the ram with a hammer to insert a nail into the flooring.

  • Connect additional tongue and groove boards one at a time to the already secured boards and cover the nail heads with putty after each board is installed. Continue adding rows of boards until they are within 1/2-inch of the opposite wall. Use the face nailing technique described in the first four steps above on boards that cannot be secured using the 401.
