How to Store Serge Cones
Using a serger sewing machine (for "overlock" stitching of edges, hems or seams) requires special serger thread that comes on large cones. Because sergers use multiple spools of thread, when you sew frequently with a serger you may amass a sizable collection of cones in a variety of colors. You have several options for storing serger cones to keep them organized and easily accessible in your sewing work space. Choose the storage option that fits your work area and store serger cones effectively.

1
Organize your thread cones by color for the easiest and most effective method of storing. Place reds with reds, browns with browns, blues with blues, and so on, to make it easy to find the thread you need.

2
Use a peg board mounted on a wall or a door to store the serger cones. Place the cones onto the pegs with the wider end of the cones at the bottom of the pegs, grouping the cones by color as you organized them.

Alternatively, you can place your thread cones on a thread rack that sits on a table or shelf. These thread racks often rotate to enable you to quickly find the thread cone you need. Place the cones on the pegs in the same manner as you would place them on a peg board.

A drawer can also serve as storage area. Measure the drawer's depth against the height of the cones. A standard serger cone is between 4 1/2 and 5 inches tall, so you will need a drawer that is about 5 1/2 inches deep. When you place the cones in the drawer, group them by color to enable you to easily find the thread you need to complete your sewing projects.

Plastic storage bins also make an effective organizer. Use bins with a depth of at least 5 1/2 inches. Group the cones by color to keep them organized.
