How to Make Steam Faster

Steam is a digital distribution service on the PC, created by Valve Software, that allows you to download PC games directly to your computer. When you have purchased a game through the Steam client, it automatically downloads the game from a Steam content server. If your download speed is slower than normal, your Steam download settings may not be configured properly. These settings can be changed from within the Steam client.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click the "Steam" icon on your desktop to launch Steam.

    • 2

Click "Steam" from the menu at the top of the program.

    • 3

Click "Settings" from the drop-down menu.

    • 4

Click the "Downloads + Cloud" tab.

    • 5

Select the speed of your Internet from the "Internet Connection" drop-down box. For example, if you are connecting from Cable, select "DSL/Cable > 2M."

    • 6

Select the Steam server closest to you by using the "Download Region" drop-down box. Every major city houses a Steam server. For example, if you are in Tampa, use the "US - Atlanta" server for optimal download speeds.

    • 7

Verify that your firewall or anti-virus software is allowing Steam access, as this could cause slow download speeds if they are blocking Steam. Consult your firewall or anti-virus software for details, as each program is different.
