How to Transfer Mobi Books to an iPad

The iPad is able to load and view a variety of different e-book formats, including Mobi files, using e-reader applications available from the iTunes App Store. Once an e-reader application has been installed, Mobipocket e-books can be transferred to the iPad via USB from a computer, using the file-sharing function built into the iTunes multimedia management software. Any Mobi files transferred to the iPad must be unprotected and without any digital rights management encryption for compatible e-reader apps to be able to open them.

Things You'll Need

  • IPad USB cable
  • ITunes
  • Download the latest version of iTunes for your computer, following the installation instructions detailed on the Apple website. Once installation has completed, launch iTunes by clicking its icon on the desktop.

  • Launch the App Store on the iPad by tapping its icon on the home screen. Tap the "Search" button. Enter a search term to find a suitable e-reader application that's compatible with Mobi e-books. Tap the "Install" button on the application's listing page, and then tap it again to confirm download and installation.

  • Connect the iPad to the computer using its USB cable. The iTunes app will detect the iPad and create an entry for it in the "Devices" section of its left-hand column.

  • Select the iPad in the "Devices" section of iTunes. Click the "Apps" tab. Scroll down to the "File Sharing" section, and select the e-reader application from the "Apps" list.

  • Drag and drop your Mobi e-book files into the "Documents" box to the right of the "Apps" list in iTunes. Click the "Sync" button in the lower-right corner to send the Mobi files to the iPad where they'll be accessible through the e-reader application.

Tips & Warnings

  • This process also works for any other e-book formats you want to send to the iPad, so long as the e-reader application is compatible with the file types.
  • To use the file-sharing function, you need iTunes version 9.1 or higher.
