How to Make Notes Default Email Program

IBM Lotus Notes is a software for corporate uses that provides email, Personal Information Management functionality and other group collaborative features. According to IBM, Notes allows the users to manage large collections of emails by allowing advanced searching and sorting features. It also serves as a single point of contact for various personal data management such as calendaring, contact list and other office documents. You can set Notes to be the default email program so it is always launched for any email-related purpose.

  • Determine whether you already have IBM Lotus Notes installed on your computer. According to IBM, Notes can run on both Windows XP, Vista and other various types of operating systems.

    In Windows XP, you can check the list of installed programs by clicking on the "Start" button at the bottom of the screen, then "Control Panel" followed by double-clicking on "Add or Remove Programs" and finally selecting "Change or Remove Programs."

    In Windows Vista, you can do this by clicking on the "Start" button, then "Control Panel" followed by "Programs" and finally "Programs and Features." Manually scan the list of installed programs to find that IBM Lotus Notes is present.

  • Proceed to install Notes, if it has not been installed on your computer. The installer program will display a prompt asking whether you want to set Notes as the default email client during the installation process. Confirm it to make Notes your default email program.

  • Set Notes to be the default email client manually, if it has been installed on your computer. You can do this by clicking the User Preference dialog box from Notes and selecting "Use Lotus Notes as my default email program."

    In Windows XP, you can do this by clicking on the "Start" button at the bottom of the screen, then "Control Panel" followed by double-clicking on "Add or Remove Programs" and finally selecting "Set Program Access and Defaults." Select the option "Use my current e-mail program" and confirm it by clicking on the "OK" button.

  • Verify that Notes has been set as the default email client. You can do this by clicking on any link to send email on web pages. This will launch Notes as the default email client if the process has been successful.
