How to Dispose of Paint in Texas


After you are all done painting a room, object or area of your home, you might find that you have some leftover paint. If you have no use for the paint or if there is only a very small amount left, you will need to dispose of it. However, in the State of Texas, paint is considered a hazardous waste. This means you cannot dispose of the paint along with your regular trash. Instead, you need to use a special disposal process.

  • Let the paint dry out. Less than ¼ a can will usually dry out on its own, but more than that should be mixed with shredded newspaper to dry out.

  • Ask the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality about Texas County Cleanups if you live in a rural area of Texas. These are special programs that come to rural areas to collect items, like paint, for disposal.
