How to Use Essential Oils For Muscle Pain

Exercise stimulates muscle development. When muscles are stretched and used, they produce a substance that encourages stem cell activity. Once activated, the cells begin to divide and create new muscle fiber, increasing the strength and size of the muscle. When over-used, muscles experience fatigue and a temporary reduction in power, strength and endurance. Pure and natural, therapeutic essential oils are useful in relieving the pain and tenderness of over-worked muscles. Essential oils can stimulate circulation and diminish pain.

  • Experiment to discover your favorite essential oils. Essential oils are available for purchase from aromatherapy practitioners, health food store, spas and online. Ginger, clove, white fir, marjoram, lemongrass, thyme, helichrysum and rosemary are beneficial for relieving muscle tension. Muscle tension happens when the muscles remain in a semi-contracted state for an extended period. Add a total of 12 drops of any combination of these oils, to 1 ounce of pomegranate or almond oil. Massage the oil on stiff joints, sore muscles and tired feet. Lemongrass is especially effective when applied to torn ligaments and muscle spasms.

  • Massage away pain. Allspice essential oil, also known as pimento berry is a light, golden yellow oil with a heavy herbaceous overtone and a hint of spice. Allspice blends well with lavender, clove, ylang ylang, vanilla, cinnamon and citrus. Allspice promotes a restful, deep sleep and the vapors are useful in opening sinus and breathing passages. Allspice essential oil improves mood and aids digestion, reduces cellulite, loosens muscles and relieves pain. Apply to skin mixed in a carrier oil. Mix 10 to 12 drops of essential oil to 1 ounce of coconut, almond or sesame seed oil and massage on affected areas.

  • Relax in a warm to hot bath. Prepare a bath oil to ease the pain of tired, over-worked muscles by adding 12 to 20 drops of fir, spruce, basil, lavender or cedar essential oil to 1 ounce almond oil. Any combination of essential oils may be used. Create a nurturing, calm sanctuary from the cares of the day. Light a few candles, add some peaceful music and unwind. Add the mixture to bathwater and soak for 30 minutes.

  • A deep and restful sleep allows muscles to relax and heal. Lavender is prized for its calming and sleep inducing qualities. Place a few drops of lavender essential oil on a cotton ball and tuck inside your pillow. Add lavender essential oil to the final rinse of linens and bedding. The fragrant herb Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) blends well with lavender and helps muscles relax. Mix 1 ounce of carrier oil with 30 drops of rosemary essential oil and massage on tired, aching muscles and weary feet. The pungent scent of rosemary is invigorating and stimulating.
