How to Make a "Man in the Yellow Hat" Costume

Save

"Curious George" is a series of classic stories about a monkey named George who is taken from the wilds of Africa by The Man in the Yellow Hat and brought to live in the big city. The Man often facilitates George's misadventures by bringing him to various places and then shows up just in time to get George out of trouble. The Man always wears a bright yellow shirt, pants, tie and hat. This costume can be adapted for any age, but is especially fun for children who comprise the most avid readers of the stories.

Things You'll Need

  • White shirt
  • White pants
  • Yellow fabric dye
  • Yellow and brown felt
  • Scissors
  • Straw hat
  • Styrofoam cone
  • Glue
  • Narrow elastic
  • Brown belt and boots
  • Dye the white shirt and pants according to directions on the package of dye. Doing this first will ensure everything is dry and ready to go when it is time to get dressed.

  • Make the hat. Cut the crown out of the straw hat. Slide the Styrofoam cone through the hole in the hat from the bottom. Glue into place. Shape the cone, if necessary. Glue yellow felt onto the hat and cone. Be sure to cover the underside of the hat brim. Make a hat band out of brown felt and glue into place.

  • Cut yellow felt into the shape of a tie. Cut out circles of different size from the brown felt and glue onto the tie. Cut a length of elastic a little bigger than the neck of the person who will be wearing it. Glue each end to one side of the tie at the top.

  • Wear the yellow pants and shirt with the hat and tie. Add a brown belt and some brown boots.

Tips & Warnings

  • A stuffed Curious George toy can be stitched into place on the back or shoulder of the person who is wearing the costume.
  • A brown messenger bag can also be added.
