How to Make a Call Without Displaying My Number

Save

If you are returning a call to a number that you do not recognize, then it is a safe practice to block your own number first. The FTC requires phone companies to provide this service to customers on a per-call or per-line basis. Customers can perform per-call blocking on their own but can expect a moderate charge from the phone company whenever they use the service. The straightforward process is effective on landline telephones and cell phones.

  • Pick up your phone and press the following keys in order: *67. If you are using a landline phone, the dial tone stutters after you press the last number as an indication that the block has been activated.

  • Dial the number you wish to call. The recipient does not see your number on caller ID. Note that there is no further indication that the block is working. If you wish to test per-call blocking, then call another phone in your home that is equipped with caller ID.

  • Repeat the process in steps 1 and 2 every time you wish to block your phone number from the person you are calling. If you want your number blocked from recipients permanently, then call your phone company and request a per-line block. If you block your number permanently, then you must dial *82 whenever you wish to display it to a call recipient.
