How to Create an MP3 File in Audacity

Audacity is a free, open-source, audio-editing program. It lets users record audio onto the computer, convert existing audio into new formats, mix multiple tracks together, add special effects to audio tracks and more. If you're browsing the interface to find MP3 options, the default download of Audacity doesn't come with this functionality. However, a free downloadable plug-in lets you add MP3 capability to the Audacity interface, making it easy for you to create MP3 files.

  • Visit the LAME website to get the LAME MP3 encoder for Audacity.

  • Click on the appropriate download link and save the file to your desktop. Download links are arranged by operating system.

  • Double-click on the downloaded file to open it.

  • Click "Next" through the on-screen setup options.

  • Close the installation wizard when the LAME MP3 encoder finishes installing.

  • Open Audacity.

  • Click "Record" to record a live audio track, or click "File" and "Open" to access an existing audio file. Once you've recorded or opened your file, you can save or re-save it as an MP3.

  • Click "File," "Export as MP3." A pop-up appears asking you to identify the LAME encoder's location. Click "Program Files," "Lame for Audacity."

  • Double-click on the file labeled "lame_enc.dll." You need only to identify the file once. From now on, you can export MP3 files without finding the encoder file.

  • Type in a file name for your MP3 and click "Save" to create your new MP3 file.
