How to Unfollow Multiple People on Twitter

How to Unfollow Multiple People on Twitter thumbnail
Twitter allows users to communicate using 140-character messages called "tweets."

The social networking and micro-blogging site "Twitter" allows users to follow each others' tweets, which are 140-character status updates. Twitter does not limit the number of users you can follow, meaning you could potentially follow hundreds, thousands or even hundreds of thousands of people. Twitter itself does not have a way for users to stop following multiple people at the same time, and a January 2010 policy restricts the way third-party websites work to allow Twitter users to stop following other users en masse; however, some applications have found a way around this by "block bulking" users instead.

Instructions

    • 1

Look through the list of users you're currently following on Twitter to get an idea of whom you want to eliminate and whom you want to keep.

    • 2

Visit a third-party website such as BrandChirp, Tweeter Karma or Twitter Mutuality. All these sites can do what Twitter itself doesn't -- allow you to sever your social networking connection with multiple people simultaneously.

    • 3

Enter your Twitter name (the symbol "@" followed by your user name, such as "@johnsmith") and password into the text boxes provided. Some applications -- like BrandChirp -- require you to sign up for an account, which costs you a monthly fee after the initial free trial period expires. Other applications, including Tweeter Karma and Twitter Mutuality, are free; however, these websites do ask users to make a donation for the operation of the site, although this is not mandatory.

    • 4

Wait while the third-party application of your choosing connects to your Twitter account. Twitter may ask you to verify whether you want to let this application to access your account; if you want to proceed, click the "OK" button when prompted.

    • 5

Select the users with whom you want to sever ties on Twitter. Depending on the application you chose, this process may be slightly different. For example, Tweeter Karma lets you check a box next to the name and avatar of the users from whom you wish to disconnect.

    • 6

Press the "Run" or "Bulk Block" button to launch the purging process.

Tips & Warnings

  • As of January 2010, Twitter no longer allows third-party websites to automatically unfollow users in bulk on behalf of account holders. Instead, some of these applications, including Tweeter Karma, give users the option of "bulk blocking" those they don't wish to follow. This is an alternative way of eliminating the connection between the two parties, which is still allowed by Twitter.

  • For security reasons, you may want to change your Twitter password after allowing one of these third-party websites to access your account information during the "unfollowing" process.
