How to Make Wavy Chevron Blankets

How to Make Wavy Chevron Blankets thumbnail
By using a size J-10 crochet hook, 2,000 yards of worsted weight yarn, and a combination of double crochet stitches, you can crochet a 3-by-5 foot blanket.

The wavy chevron pattern is a crochet stitch made up of shells and cluster worked in double chain stitches. Three double chain stitches are worked into one stitch to form the peaks (also called an increase); the valleys are formed by skipping two stitches (a decrease). This combination yields a soft but dense material. The pattern instructions here are for a 36-by-60 inch blanket of medium weight yarn.

      Start by chaining 132 stitches.

Work the foundation row. Work a double crochet stitch (commonly abbreviated "DC" in pattern books) in the fourth chain from hook. Work a double crochet stitch in each of the next three chain stitches. Then, work three double crochet stitches in the next chain stitch. Double crochet stitch in next five chain stitches. Repeat the following pattern to the end of the row: skip the next two chain stitches, double crochet stitch in each of the next five chain stitches, work three double crochet stitches in next chain stitch, and work a double crochet stitch in each of the next five chain stitches.

Work in the wavy chevron pattern stitch until afghan measures desired length. The pattern stitch is a repeat of the following row: Chain three, turn. Repeat the following to the last five stitches: skip the next two double crochet stitches, double crochet stitch in each of the next five stitches, work three double crochet stitches in next stitch, and work a double crochet stitch in each of the next five stitches. In the last five stitches, work a double crochet stitch in next five double crochet stitches, skip the next double crochet stitch, and finish by working a double crochet stitch in the top of turning chain stitch. Six rows measure approximately four inches.

Finish blanket by weaving in yarn ends and making tassel fringe, if desired. To make tassels, cut lengths of fabric into six 8-inch pieces for each tassel desired. Fold yarn lengths in half, creating a loop. Insert end of yarn loop through bottom edge of blanket. Push the ends of the looped yarn through the loop made; pull tight to finish tassel. Yarn may be doubled or tripled to create fuller tassels.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to make a striped blanket, work the last stitch of the old color to last yarn over. Then, yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to the complete stitch and proceed from there.

  • Gauge is not important. While using a J-10 hook will produce the measurements listed if using a medium, worsted weight yarn, if you use a different hook or a different weight yarn, the blanket may be sized differently, but it will still get the job done. Just remember that the length of your starting chain is approximately the width your blanket will be.

  • If you want to adjust the size, keep in mind that the chevron stitch pattern as listed is worked over a multiple of 13 stitches, plus 12, and 13 stitches measure approximately 2 inches.
