How to Help Out the Poor Families thumbnail
Extending charity to poor families can help them get on their feet, as well as survive.

Assisting poor families who live in this country can seem like an overwhelming task. Being one person and seeing so much need can cause you to feel that helping in any significant way is impossible. One answer to helping poor families is to start with one family at a time. You may know a family in your neighborhood, or you can contact a church or other organization that helps the poor and ask how you can assist a family. Little acts of assistance can be stepping stones to help a poor family in their time of need. Every little bit helps.

Instructions

Research and offer referrals to programs and organizations that can help with the issues the family is facing. Depending on the financial position of the family, they may not have access to the Internet or even a phone. One of the best things you can do for them is to help them find people who can assist them more effectively than you can. Established programs can provide long-term solutions, and they also have knowledge of other programs and organizations that help those who are in need.

Purchase gift cards for the family. As wonderful and appreciated as dropping off groceries or clothing is, if it is possible, find a supermarket or large chain store near them and purchase gift cards so that the family can go in and get the things that they need. This allows the family to take stock of what they already have and add to that. You do not want to purchase 2 gallons of milk for them if what they need is cereal to go with the milk they already have.

Purchase bus tokens or taxi vouchers. One of the most difficult aspects of needy families is the ability to get around. Providing this access to transportation allows them the ability to look for work, get to work, go to school, keep doctor's appointments and run other errands which cannot be done on foot.

Offer emotional support and an ear to listen. In addition to material needs, the poor have psychological and emotional issues. Do not underestimate how much it can mean to a person to have someone to talk to. You will not have all of the solutions that they may require, but human beings need to feel that they have someone who will listen to them and validate their concerns, and you can fulfill this important need without spending any money. Expressions of support and encouragement are important and needed, just as much as food and shelter.
