How to Select a Default Image Editor in Windows XP

You can change the default image editor in Microsoft Windows XP by downloading and running a small program called, Imgeditor. The program works only on Windows XP and changes the necessary Windows Registry entries for the default image editor. Once you run the program, any time you right-click an image and click "Edit," the default program opens the image ready to edit.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to "windowsxp.mvps.org/imgeditor.htm" in the Web browser and download the Imgeditor zip file.

    • 2

Decompress the zip file and extract the contents to your hard drive.

    • 3

Locate "Imgeditor.exe" and double-click the file.

    • 4

Click the "Browse" button and then locate the image editor you want to use. Most Windows applications are located on the main hard drive under the "Program Files" directory. Go to the image editing directory, select the executable file you want to use and hit the "Enter" key.

    • 5

Click the "Apply" button to save the changes. On the Imgeditor interface, you can also choose which image types you want to associate with the image editing software. By default, the program associates all image types. Close the program when finished.
