Add water to an iron to produce steam.

Although there is a wide variety of clothing irons on the market, almost all have a setting included for steam ironing. Steam ironing is often the choice for such fabrics as polyester, corduroy and any other fabric that is thick in nature. In order to iron your clothes with steam, you must first fill the iron with water. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the water hole on the iron. If there is a cover, you will need to open it.

    • 2

Place cold tap water in a measuring cup. If you don't have a measuring cup, you can use any cup with a spout. Your iron won't need more than 1 cup of water.

    • 3

Pour the water in the water hole on the iron. Keep a close eye on the fill line, and fill slowly. Stop when the water level reaches the designated fill line. Replace the water hole cover if the iron had one.

    • 4

Turn the iron to the steam setting and wait for it to heat up before using.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use distilled water if you have hard tap water.

  • Do not use water that has gone through a water softening system.

  • Keep the steam vents facing away from your body. The steam can cause a serious burn.
