How to Sew a Men's Pirate Hat

How to Sew a Men's Pirate Hat thumbnail
Cobble together your own swashbuckling pirate hat for a high seas adventure.

Whether you're a fan of Halloween antics or into Renaissance fairs, a pirate costume is always a fun choice. There are a few different styles of pirate to pick from, such as the swashbuckling villain, the lowly deckhand and the eerie ghost captain. No matter what type of pirate you choose to be, you need to top off your costume with an eye-catching buccaneer's hat. Professionally crafted hats can be expensive, but a clever pirate can solve this dilemma with a bit of sewing.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a pattern for the brim. Draw a rectangle that is as long as your head circumference, and 3 inches wide. Cut the rectangle from the paper and tape the short ends together to create a loop.

    • 2

Trace the loop onto another sheet of paper. Decide how wide you want the brim of the hat to be, and then draw a larger circle this distance away from the first circle. Cut along both circle lines to get the brim pattern. Keep the small circle for the crown tip pattern.

    • 3

Make a pattern for the crown band. Take apart your looped paper and trace it, adding 1 inch to the length. Cut the new rectangle to use as the pattern.

    • 4

Pin all pattern pieces to your felt and cut the felt so you have 1 of each piece.

    • 5

Pin the short edges of the crown band together. Sew 1/2 inch away from the edges to make a loop.

    • 6

Pin the edges of the crown tip to one side of the crown band. Sew these together 1/2 inch away from the edges.

    • 7

Pin the other side of the crown band to the inside circle of the brim. Sew them together, 1/2 inch away from the edges.

    • 8

Turn the hat right side out, hiding the seam allowances. Turn the side of the hat that has the band seam to the back.

    • 9

Find the front of the hat and put a pin there to mark the place, dividing the hat evenly.

    • 10

Fold the sides of the hat up against the band and pin. These create a crease in the front. Hand stitch the brim to the band at these points.

    • 11

Fold the back side of the hat up against the band, creating two creases at the back of the hat. Hand stitch the brim to the band here.
