How to Twist Wire for Jewelry
Twisted wire gives handmade jewelry added texture, but it can be difficult to find and is often expensive. Make your own twists for wire-wrapping your one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces with a surprising addition to your jewelry-making tool list.
Things You'll Need
- Deadsoft gold, silver or copper wire
- Chain-nose or flat-nose pliers
- Flush cutters
- Electric or battery-operated drill

1
Unwind the wire and straighten it by gently sliding chain-nose or flat-nose pliers along its length. Nylon-coated pliers do not scratch the wire as easily, but you can make do with uncoated tools.
-
2
Cut the wire into two pieces about twice as long as the length of the finished piece.

-
3
Thread the ends of the wire in the drill's bit chuck and tighten the chuck to hold them securely.
-
4
Run the drill slowly while holding the wires about 6 inches from the drill. Continue until the wires twist together to the tightness you prefer.

Tips & Warnings
You may also use a hand-turned wire jig to twist the wire. Experiment with square and half-round wires for a different look for your jewelry designs. You can twist half-hard wire, as well, but it is much more difficult to maintain an even twist.
Protect your eyes from flying wires by wearing safety goggles.
