Sometimes the old cliches are true. In this case, "you can't be too careful" particularly comes to mind. Modern technology makes electronic eavesdropping and listening an unwanted reality. If you suspect you are being monitored and want to sweep your home or spaces for listening devices, use some techniques gleaned from professionals. No technique is guaranteed to prevent all spying, but these techniques reduce likelihoods and hep find listening devices. If you find devices, check with your local and state laws as the person who planted them may be in violation of the law.

Plug the noise canceling headphones into the radio receiver jack. Slowly turn the dial through the whole frequency range. Listen for points on the dial where there is a steady, uniform beep or set pattern of beeps. This is an indicator of a transmitting device, one that may be recording your noises or conversations. This style of listening device is among the more common sold in spy and gear stores.

Plug the headphones into the emergency scanner and walk around the house slowly listening for any beeps or patterns of beeps. The emergency scanner is sensitive to transmitting devices and picks up signals unheard through the common ear.

Purchase a "bug" detector at a spy store or at an online spy gear supplier. Use the "bug" detector to pick up listening devices in your home, office or automobiles. These devices cost between $200 to $300, as of April 2011, and are much more sensitive than the radios. Point the detection wand around the house and listen to the detector via the headphones.

Bring the infrared camera into the house. Turn off the lights in each room and take a series of pictures. An infrared camera picks up on the heat or electronic signals the transmitting devices emit. Make sure you turn off all lights and close blinds so the signals are detected by the camera.
