How to Store a Fountain Pen With Ink in it

A fountain pen nib can be made of stainless steel, gold or other metals.

A fountain pen consists of several basic parts: the nib, feed and ink supply. The nib is the tip or point of the fountain pen. The feed is attached to the nib and allows the ink to travel from the ink supply to the tip so that you can write with the pen. Properly storing a fountain pen containing ink helps prevent problems such as leakage or coagulation of the ink.

1. Place the cap tightly on the tip or nib of the fountain pen.

2. Store the fountain pen upright in a pencil holder with the lid intact.

3. Remove the ink or ink cartridge from the fountain pen and clean the pen if you aren't planning on using it for more than one week.

Tips & Warnings

• Store unfilled fountain pens in their original box or flat in a drawer. As long as they aren't filled with ink, horizontal storage is acceptable.

• Storing the pen improperly can cause the ink to dry and coagulate in the tip, which can prevent the pen from writing smoothly or at all.

• Never empty fountain pen ink back into the original bottle of ink.
