How to Make a Hand Painted Menu Board for Snow Cones
Starting a snow cone business can be a good way to make money with very little overhead cost. Even a very small business, though, needs advertising to be successful. A successful snow cone business will use a visual draw to attract passersby, and a simple, eye-catching handmade menu board can be the perfect way to get the most bang for your advertising buck. A well-designed snow cone menu board is a balance between bold, informative and clean. A chalkboard often is used for menus, but you will prefer an easier-to-clean and more weather-resistant surface.
Things You'll Need
- Melamine board or acrylic sheet, either white or black
- Liquid neon chalk markers

1
Buy a piece of melamine board or acrylic sheet measuring at least 24 inches by 36 inches. Use an opaque black or white surface so the menu design stands out as much as possible.
-
2
Buy two or more colors of liquid neon chalk markers. Choose fat-tipped markers rather than fine-tipped for a bolder effect. Unlike traditional chalk, these markers are semi-permanent and not as susceptible to smudging or weather damage. Liquid chalk markers are easily removed with most window cleaners.

3
Draw a large picture of a snow cone on the top left of the menu board with a couple of different marker colors. Write "Snow Cone Menu" or just "Menu" to the right of the snow cone design, using large, fat letters.
-
4
Fill in the menu board with prices and a list of flavors with small but bold letters. You should be able to read everything on the menu from 15 feet away. If you cannot, go over the menu with the markers and add boldness to the design.

Set the snow cone menu on an easel or hang it from the front of the snow cone cart.

Tips & Warnings
Keep your menu design simple and bold. Too many embellishments will be a distraction.
