Hangman Instructions

Hangman is a brainteasing word game that uses two players. The idea is to pick a word and have your opponent guess letters in an attempt to guess your chosen word. If the letter is in the word then you come that much closer to winning. Each time your opponent is incorrect you will add pieces of a stickman to the gallows. Your opponent will either guess the word correctly or the stickman will get hung and he or she loses.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Choose someone to play Hangman with and gather paper and a pencil to get started.

  • Decide who will start the game. Brainstorm for a word that could be spelled by both of you and keep the word in your head. Do not say it out loud.

  • Draw gallows on the paper. It should resemble the picture below but with only one noose. Toward the bottom of the paper draw a dash for each letter of your chosen word.

  • Ask your opponent to select a letter. If the letter is in the word you have chosen, then write it in the dashes where the letter appears. If their letter is not part of your word, then you draw a head attached to the noose in the gallows.

  • Allow your opponent to choose another letter and do the same, either adding it to the dashes below or by adding more parts to the stickman that is being built in the gallows. If they can fill in the dashes first, they win, otherwise, if the stickman gets finished first then they have hung themselves and lose the game. Typically, the finished stickman consists of a head, body, arms and legs. Each part is drawn one at a time, including the arms and legs.
