Sounds occur in a wide range of frequencies. The human ear can hear sounds approximately between 20Hz and 20kHz. (See Reference 1) High pitched sounds occurring at the upper range of human hearing can be difficult to hear. Hearing a high-pitched noise may require making a few preparations. Trying to hear a high-pitched noise allows you to experience one of your senses functioning near its limit.

      Make sure there is quiet all around. Turn off appliances and electronic devices. Sometimes electrical appliances and equipment make sounds without people realizing it.

      Don't touch your ears. Make sure nothing is touching your ears.

      Be quiet. Hold your breath. Stop moving.

      Listen carefully. Try to pick out a high-pitched noise in the silence, or from any sounds that may remain.

  • If you hear a continuous high-pitched ringing in your ear, it may be a sign of a medical condition. Seek medical help. It may be difficult to hear a high-pitched noise in a loud environment such as in cities or factories, or outside at airports. As people age, their hearing deteriorates beginning with higher frequencies. It actually may be impossible for a person with hearing loss to hear a high-pitched noise. Even without hearing loss, you may be simply unable to hear a high-pitched noise.
