How to Compress Files to Store in a Flash Drive

Flash drives typically have a limited amount of storage space when compared with normal hard drives, so if you want to store files on them, compressing the files can help you save space so that you can store more files on the flash drive. Windows supports the Zip compression format natively, and you can quickly compress files into Zip files in Windows to prepare them for storage on the flash drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" menu and open Windows Explorer. Browse to the files that you want to compress.

    • 2

Highlight the files, right-click on them and then click "Send to."

    • 3

Click "Compressed (zipped) folder." A Zip file containing your selected files is created in the same location as the files you zipped. Your Zip file is now ready to be transferred to your flash drive through a move or copy/paste operation.
