A drawstring ponytail can be an ideal look for growing out your hair or wanting to change up your appearance. However, without proper maintenance the ponytail will look less than flattering. By taking the time to care for a drawstring ponytail, you will increase its lifetime.

Cleaning

Fill a sink with lukewarm water and a mild shampoo. Place the ponytail in the water and swish it around.

Rinse the shampoo out with lukewarm water. Squeeze the hair out gently to remove some of the water.

Let the ponytail air dry. You can blot it with a towel to remove some of the water, but you should not rub the ponytail. It will ruin the hair.

Use the wide-tooth comb to comb out the ponytail once it is completely dry. Combing wet hair can be damaging to the ponytail. Begin combing out the ponytail at the bottom. Starting at the top will also damage the ponytail.

Do not style synthetic hair. It will melt. Ponytails made with natural hair can be heat styled.

Daily Maintenance

Comb the hair with a wide-tooth comb before you put it on and before you go to bed.

Use a light oil sheen on the hair after styling.

Tie down your ponytail with a satin scarf before you go to bed. This will help the ponytail last longer. Additionally, you will need to fluff the ponytail in the morning.

Braid the hair if you are going to get it wet. Whether it is raining or you are going swimming, the braid will keep it from being tangled.
