1
Remove all hazardous materials, such as cleaning supplies, medicine and sharp objects, from lower-level cabinets and transfer them higher up and out of reach. The best way to tackle child-proofing is to start with the least amount of barriers, according to "The Stay-at-Home Dad Handbook."

2
Attach a child-proof lock to all of the low cabinets that your child can easily access. For cabinets without handles, use interior adhesive safety latches or magnetic locks. For cabinets with handles, you can use sliding locks, which act similarly to a zip-tie around the handles.

3
Leave a cabinet open that is filled with items that are not dangerous such as dishcloths, toys and nonbreakable items. This will help satisfy your child's curiosity and give her the opportunity to roam without putting herself at risk.
-
4
Remove step stools from the area unless you are supervising the child. Children can easily use these to access higher cabinets that do not contain child-safety locks.
-
5
Position a child-proof gate to areas with cabinetry to bar access.
