How to Make a Child's Astronaut Suit

Make a child's astronaut costume from a few simple materials.

An astronaut costume can be made of many different materials. Some costumes are very simple, while others are extremely complicated. You can make the costume as simple or as elaborate as you would like and as time allows. A simple costume, however, takes much less time to put together and still is complicated enough to clearly identify the costume as an astronaut's costume. A simple costume is also easier to transport in the car or wear while trick or treating or during playtime.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint a straight line of silver paint from the jumpsuit's wrist to the shoulder. Repeat for the other arm. Allow the paint to dry for one hour. Paint a strip on the outside edge of the legs from the waist to the ankle opening. Allow the paint to dry for two additional hours.

    • 2

Cut out the letters "NASA" from red felt. Make the letters about 4 inches high. Glue the letters to the back of the jumpsuit. Cut out 2-inch letters spelling "USA" from red felt. Glue these letters to the front left side of the jumpsuit. Glue a small American flag to the left sleeve.

    • 3

Roll up a dish towel and tape it in a circle around your child's head. Remove the towel from the head and place it inside the bucket. Tape the towel inside the bucket with duct tape.

    • 4

Put the bucket over your child's head. Mark the placement of your child's face on the bucket with a permanent marker. Remove the bucket and cut out the marked area with a small handsaw.

    • 5

Glue two 8-inch wide pieces of upholstery foam inside the helmet near the opening. These foam pieces will prevent the helmet from slipping while the child is wearing it. Place astronaut-themed stickers on the helmet for decoration.

    • 6

Have the child put on the jumpsuit and helmet. Give the child rain boots to wear to simulate space boots. Tuck the jumpsuit into the boots to finish the costume.
