How to Join Floor Trim Pieces
Floor trim is generally miter-cut at the ends so that the pieces can fit together in the corners. The idea is to make each of the two miter cuts half the total angle of the corner, so they form the full corner when combined. A standard corner is 90 degrees, so a standard miter cut for trim is 45 degrees. Use pre-finished trim so you don't have to finish it once it's on the wall. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the first wall in the room, from one corner outward, at floor level. Mark that measurement on a piece of floor trim with a pencil, with two marks and the measurement between them.
-
2
Lay the trim on your miter saw, standing in the position it will be against the wall. Swivel the blade 45 degrees inward, so it points to the center of the board. Make the cut.

3
Slide the trim over so the second mark is under the blade. Turn the blade 45 degrees toward the middle of the trim (so it's pointing in the opposite in opposite direction as before). Cut it.
-
4
Repeat the process to measure and cut the trim for each wall.
-
5
Secure each of the pieces with trim nails, driving them in with your hammer and sinking the heads with your center punch. Use one nail every 10 or 12 inches along the top and bottom of the piece. The mitered ends should butt to one another to form the corners.
