How to Stop a Text From Being Sent

Perhaps you've written a text message hastily and forgotten an important piece of information. Or maybe you've selected the wrong recipient for the text. Whatever the case may be, it's sometimes necessary to abort a text message before it is sent. While there's no surefire way to do this, there are a couple steps you can take to prevent message delivery.

  • Press your phone's "End" button. It's the same button you use to decline or end a call. In some cases, this cancels the sending of the text message.

  • Pull off the phone's back cover quickly and take out the battery. If you're fast enough, this could power off the phone before the message is actually sent. If your phone is not capable of a battery pull, press and hold the power off button until it turns off.

  • Turn the phone back on and access your messaging outbox. Check to see if the message was sent. If a pending symbol appears next to the message, delete the message from your phone to make sure it isn't delivered. There is no way to undo a sent message, so you'll have to hope that you acted quickly enough.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check your phone's manufacturer's guide for tips on how best to stop a text message from going out. You might have other options than listed above.
