How to Upgrade DDR RAM

Random access memory (RAM) is a vital component to any computer. RAM is responsible for pre-loading information that your computer is preparing to run. Upgrading your system RAM will provide a significant performance improvement across almost all functions, and is one of the cheapest and most effective upgrade options. DDR RAM is one of several RAM types in use by computers, and you must make sure that your system is compatible with the RAM type you want before installing it.

      Power down the computer system and remove the power cord and any other cords attached to the computer.

      Press the power button on the computer for 10 seconds, then release it.

      Remove any screws from the back of the case that are keeping the side panel attached to the main case chassis.

      Remove and set aside the side case panel.

    • 5

      Touch the outside of the case with your bare hand to dissipate any built-up electrical charge.

      Locate the RAM slots and if replacing a RAM stick, press down on the plastic tabs holding the RAM stick in place.

      Lift the RAM stick straight up to remove it from the slot.

      Place the new stick of RAM into an empty RAM slot, and press down until it clicks into place.

      Place the side panel back onto the computer case and replace the screws your previously removed.

      Plug the power cord, and any other cords previously removed, back into the computer.

      Power the computer back on. The RAM upgrade is complete.
