Decide the grade level of students summer school will service. A lot of school districts target children in third through fifth grade, as those are the grade levels that participate in state testing. In middle school and high school, select students who are struggling in class and on state assessments.
-
4
Hire teachers based on the number of students attending summer school. Keep class sizes small so children have the advantage of working in smaller groups with the teacher. Consider a ratio of one teacher to 10 or 12 students.
-
5
Select the students who have the highest needs based on their state testing scores, as well as how they do in the classroom. A small group size helps the neediest children get the instruction they need.
-
6
Focus instruction during summer school on reading and math.
-
7
Send permission slips home with the children who have been selected. Explain to parents how long the session will run, the rules of the session, attendance requirements and what instruction will take place.
-
