How to Make Firefox Tabs Smaller

Past versions of the Firefox Web browser gave users the ability to change the size of browser tabs using an internal configuration feature called "about:config." This feature was not removed from Firefox 4, but Mozilla moved it to a separate configuration file that you can locate in Windows Explorer. If you are unhappy with the size of the tabs in Firefox 4, add a short line of code to this file to change it.

Things You'll Need

  • Mozilla Firefox 4
  • Close Firefox if it is running.

  • Open the Start menu and click "Computer."

  • Double-click the icon for hard drive "C:."

  • Click the "Organize" button in the upper-left corner of the window and select "Folder and Search Options."

  • Click the "View" tab.

  • Click the "Show hidden files, folders and drives" radio button and then click "OK."

  • Open the "Users" folder and then open the folder with your Windows user name.

  • Open the "AppData," "Roaming," "Mozilla" and "Firefox" folders. The "Firefox" folder contains a folder with a string of letters and numbers, such as "2dtt4f2w.default." Open this folder and then open the "Chrome" folder.

  • Change the name of the file "userChrome-example.css" to "userChrome.css."

  • Right-click the file "userChrome.css" and select "Open With" and "WordPad."

  • Click with the mouse or push the down-arrow key to place the cursor at the end of the file.

  • Add the following code to the end of the document:

    .tabbrowser-tab:not([pinned]) {

    max-width: 250px !important;

    min-width: 40px !important;

    You may find it helpful to highlight the code with your mouse, select "Copy," and then right-click in WordPad and select "Paste."

  • Change the line "max-width: 250px !important;" so that it displays a number lower than 250. This number reflects the maximum width of the tabs in Firefox in pixels.

  • Save and close "userChrome.css" and then open Firefox to see the new tab size. Close Firefox and adjust the file again until you are happy with the new tab size.
