Genetics is the key determiner of the size a puppy will be as an adult.

Genetics play a large role in the size a puppy will be when it reaches adulthood. Getting a toy poodle puppy from a breeder who has extensive information on the background of both parents is the best way to predict its eventual size. Female pups will generally be about the same size as the mother, and males will grow to about the same size as the father. An article in Toy Poodle News also offers a formula that it says has proved reliable in predicting a puppy's adult size. Poodle Poppy has a size estimator chart it says can help predict the size the pup will reach as an adult.

    Things You'll Need

    • Sire and dam size
    • Poodle size estimator chart
      • 1

Look at the sire and the dam. Toy poodle breeders will have size information on both parents, as well as other dogs in the puppy's breed line. Ask if they have bred this pair before and the typical size of their offspring.

Weigh the puppy at 10 weeks of age. Multiply that weight by 2.5. Toy Poodle News says the resulting number should be a good approximation of the weight the pup will reach as an adult. For example, a puppy that weighs 1.5 lbs. at 10 weeks should weigh about 4 lbs. full grown; a 4-lb., 10-week-old pup should reach about 10 lbs.

Refer to a poodle size estimator chart. Poodle Poppy and FancyPoo4U provide charts where you can compare the size of your puppy to averages of other poodles' weights at each stage of growth.
