How to Connect to a Networked Printer


Setting up networked printers throughout the office can save you a lot of time and money. With those networked printers in place, your employees can share resources, which in turn eliminates the need to buy every employee an individual desktop printer. After you have set up the network printers within the office, employees with access to the network can connect to those network resources any time they need to.

  • Walk over to the printer and look for a label indicating the printer name. When the network administrator or IT staff sets up a network printer, they should label each printer with a distinct network name. Check with your IT team if you cannot find the printer name.

  • Ask your network administrator or IT staff member for the name of the file and print server. You may be able to find the name of the file and print server by looking at your mapped network drives in Windows Explorer. Just right-click "My Computer," choose "Explore" and look at your network drives. You may see a drive mapping like "\myshare\myserver." In that example "myserver" is the name of the file and print server.

  • Click the "Start" button on your computer and choose the "Run" option. Type two slashes, then the name of the file and print server, i.e. //myserver.

  • Double-click the name of the network printer you want to add. A separate window opens up after the printer has been installed.
