This is a simple and interesting fashion design project that doesn't require much time and allows you to be creative. With just a couple materials and a few simple steps, you can easily customize a T-shirt appropriate for parties, concerts and beyond. Experiment with creating stylish, one-of-a-kind ripped T-shirt designs.
Things You'll Need
- Sharp scissors
Backless Ripped Design
Cut both sleeves off of the T-shirt. Start cutting about an inch below the underarms and cut upward, toward the neck.
Cut off the collar, starting right below the neckline. This will create a more comfortable and stylish neckline. To create an off-the-shoulder design, cut ½ an inch to 1 inch lower than the neckline seam.
Position the T-shirt so that it is lying front down and the back of the shirt is facing you. Draw together the two arm holes. They should meet in the center of the back of the T-shirt.
Use scrap fabric left over from removing the neckline seam in Step 2 to act as a bind. Wrap it around the gathered material and securely knot it. Your completed T-shirt should have a semi-triangular shape toward the top, with a draped look toward the bottom.
Side Ripped Design
Cut a slim triangle on each side of the T-shirt from the hem to within 2 inches of the underarm seam. Cut it so that the triangle shape is thinnest toward the arm and widest toward the bottom.
Pinch small pieces of fabric and cut small slits to create evenly lined pairs of holes on each side of the triangles.
Cut the leftover fabric from Step 1 into strips, with widths small enough to fit through the slits made in Step 2. The strips should be about 2 to 4 inches in length.
Thread the strips into the pairs of slits and securely tie them. Do this on both sides of the shirt, until each pair of slits has a strip tied through it. Once complete, you will have a stylish, ripped pattern on each side of your shirt.
Tips & Warnings
- Don't immediately discard scraps; wait until your T-shirt is complete. You will need to use the scraps as you go along.
- Always be cautious when using scissors.
