How to Clean a DIMM Memory Module

RAM comes in many packages, such as the dual in-line memory module, or DIMM. Regardless of the package, all memory has connector pins that allow communication between it and a computer. When these pins become dirty, the memory module may not be detectable by the computer and it will appear to be defective. You can clean the pins to ensure a good connection with the computer. Cleaning a DIMM only takes a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • DIMM
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Paper towel
  • Moisten a paper towel with rubbing alcohol.

  • Rub the copper pins of the memory module with the paper towel. Use a circular motion and do not apply much force. You just want to gently rub the pins and let the rubbing alcohol do most of the work.

  • Allow the pins to dry. They will air dry in a matter of minutes.
