How to Make Lady Liberty Costumes for Kids
A Lady Liberty or Statue of Liberty costume allows your child to show her sense of patriotism. The costume can be worn for Halloween, for costume parties or for school plays. It can be created with a couple of yards of fabric or an existing dress from your closet and a few pieces of craft foam.
Things You'll Need
- Light green dress and shawl or 3 yards of light green fabric
- Craft foam in light green, and a small amount of red or gold
- Flashlight
- Craft paint, light green and gold
- Light green face/body paint
- Pins

1
Sew a simple tunic to fit the child, plus a long scarf or shawl to wrap around the body, using sea-foam or verdigris (light-green) fabric. Measure from the right shoulder to the left knee and double that to determine the length of the scarf. Connect the ends of the scarf to make a circle and attach it to the right shoulder. It will be worn across the body.

2
(Alternate) Hem a long light green dress from your closet or a thrift store with pins to fit the child. Drape a scarf that is roughly the same color across the body, pinning it at the shoulder.

3
Make the Lady Liberty crown with craft foam. Make a band that goes around the head like a visor. Cut out seven triangle spires like the spikes on the crown and staple them in place. Use a black magic marker to recreate the window detail.

4
Paint a large flashlight light green and paint the rim gold. Cut out flame-shaped pieces from the red or gold craft foam and glue them to the top of the flashlight. Use the light for an extra effect.

5
Carefully apply light-green face paint to the face, hands and other exposed skin. Consider green hair spray paint for the hair.
