A pop-up blocker stops most uninvited pop-up windows.

Going to a website and having a second pop-up window open that you did not request is an undesirable experience for many website visitors. These pop-ups are small browser windows containing advertisements (usually) that open as soon as a web page that contains one loads in your browser. Internet Explorer 8 has a built in Pop-up blocker tool to help you manage how you would like to deal with these pop-up advertisements.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Internet Explorer and click "Tools" in the top menu, select "Pop-up Blocker" in the list, then "Turn on Pop-up Blocker" to turn the Pop Up Blocker on.

    • 2

Click "Tools" in the top menu again, select "Pop-up Blocker" in the list, then "Pop-up Blocker Settings" to open the "Pop-up Blocker Settings" dialog box.

    • 3

Enter the address of any websites in which you want to allow pop-ups in the "Address of website to allow" field in the "Exceptions" section in the "Pop-up Blocker Settings" dialog box and click the "Add" button. This adds the website to the "Allowed sites" box in the "Exceptions" section of the "Pop-up Blocker Settings" dialog box.

    • 4

Select a website in the "Allowed sites" box in the "Exceptions" section in the "Pop-up Blocker Settings" dialog box and click the "Remove" button to remove the website from the "Allowed sites" list.

    • 5

Check the appropriate check box in the "Notifications and blocking level" section of the "Pop-up Blocker Settings" dialog box to "Play a sound when a pop-up is blocked" or/and to "Show Information Bar when a pop-up is blocked."

    • 6

Click the arrow in the "Blocking level" field in the "Notifications and blocking level" section of the "Pop-up Blocker Settings" dialog box. Set your blocking level to "High: Block all pop-ups," "Medium: Block most automatic pop-ups" or "Low: Allow pop-ups from secure sites" by selecting it from the list. Click the "Close" button in the lower-right corner of the "Pop-up Blocker Settings" dialog box to save the changes and close the dialog box.
