How to Install Headlights on a 1996 Ford F150

The Ford Motor Company was the first domestic company to benefit from an amendment of the 1981 federal headlamp regulations in order to have its European-produced replaceable-bulb headlamps -- set in a architectural and aerodynamic design -- accepted. These were made of plastic for the first time. The first vehicle with this type of lights was produced in 1983. The headlight bulb can be easily replaced in the 1986 Ford F-150.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the electrical connector from the back of the headlamp assembly -- when you look directly behind the headlamp, you will see a large, plastic lock-ring; the plug is in the center of the lock-ring. Squeeze the plug and pull it out.

    • 2

Turn the lock-ring counterclockwise to remove it. Pull the lock-ring and bulb out as one unit.

    • 3

Separate the old bulb from the lock-ring by pulling them apart. Insert the plug end of the new bulb through the lock-ring, using a cloth or gloves to prevent touching the bulb (as the oil from one's skin is enough to cause internal arcing, severely limiting the bulb's life span; a clean rag or gloves can prevent this from occurring).

    • 4

Install the bulb and lock-ring into the rear of the headlamp housing and turn the lock-ring clockwise to lock it in place. Plug the electrical harness connector into the bulb socket.
