Instructions for the N-400 Application for Naturalization
You may qualify for Form N-400, the application to become a naturalized U.S. citizen, if you are at least age 18, a legal permanent resident for at least five years or three years if the person is the spouse of a U.S. citizen and are able to read and write in English. You also may qualify if you honorably served in the U.S. Armed Forces for at least one year and you file your application while still serving or within six months after your service ends.

Complete Part 1. Provide your green card number, your legal name, your name as it appears on your green card and any previous names you have used.

Complete Part 2, which determines your eligibility for naturalization. Check box "A" if you have been a lawful permanent resident for at least five years; box "B" if you have been a lawful permanent resident for at least three years and you have been married and living with a U.S. citizen for at least three years and your spouse has been a citizen for at least three years; or box "C" if you qualify based on military service.

Complete Part 3. You must provide information about yourself, such as your Social Security number, date of birth, the date you became a permanent resident, where you were born, your country of nationality, your marital status and whether you have a disability.

Complete part 4. Provide your contact information, such as your address, telephone numbers and email address, if you have one.

Complete Part 5 in which you provide information about your criminal record. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, refers to this information and the information obtained from the background check on your fingerprints. Check the appropriate boxes regarding your gender, race, hair color and eye color.

Complete part 6. List the places, along with the corresponding dates, that you have lived and where you have worked the last five years.

Complete Part 7. Record the total number of days you spent outside of the U.S. within the last five years and the number of trips of 24 hours or more that you took outside of the U.S. within the last five years. Provide the specific dates you left and returned to the U.S. and the countries where you traveled.

Complete Part 8. Answer questions about your marital history, such as the number of times you have been married and your current marital status. If you are currently married, you must provide the name, address, date of birth and the Social Security number of your spouse, the number of times your spouse has been married, whether your spouse is a U.S. citizen, and, if your spouse is not a citizen, your spouse's country of origin, green card number and your spouse's immigration status.

Complete Part 9. Provide the number of children you have, if any, and their names, dates of birth, green card numbers, if any, country of birth and addresses.

Complete Part 10. Answer questions No. 1 through 39 by selecting the "Yes" or "No" box. Questions include whether you have ever voted, claimed to be a U.S. citizen, whether you have been declared legally incompetent, whether you have ever been associated with the Communist Party or a terrorist organization, whether you worked or were associated with the Nazi government of Germany and names of any organizations, associations or parties in which you are or have been a member. Questions related to your moral character include whether you have ever been a prostitute, been charged with committing a crime, been convicted of a crime, been in jail or prison, sold illegal drugs and whether you have ever given false information to a U.S. government official.

Sign and date the application In Part 11. You must sign your full name without the use of initials or abbreviations.

Tips & Warnings
Write your green card number on every page of the application,
