Savvy home cooks may want to grind rice to powder for a number of reasons. Ground rice is an inexpensive alternative to commercially produced baby cereal, and it serves as a nutritious growing medium for mushroom cultivation. The gluten-intolerant often grind rice to a very fine powder to use as a gluten-free flour substitute in baking. A coffee grinder will grind rice to the right consistency for use as a baby cereal or growing medium, while a more powerful food processor is required to make a finer rice powder suitable for baking.
Things You'll Need
- Blade coffee grinder or food processor
- Fine-meshed sieve
- Large mixing bowl
Pour approximately 1/4 cup rice into a blade coffee grinder. Put the top on the grinder.
Grind the rice for 10 seconds and remove the top. Check the consistency of the rice powder. Continue grinding in 10-second intervals until the rice powder is the consistency you want.
Pour the rice powder out of the coffee grinder. Wipe any residue away with a moistened paper towel.
Put 2 cups rice in a fine-meshed sieve and rinse with cool tap water. Place the rice in a large mixing bowl and cover it with water. Let it soak for an hour.
Drain the rice in the fine-meshed sieve. Spread the rice out on a clean dish towel or paper towel, and let it dry for four to five hours. Check the rice every hour and pull apart clumps so they don't stick together as they dry.
Put 1 cup of the dried rice in a food processor. Pulse the rice for 3 seconds at a time until it is the consistency you want.
Pour the pulverized rice through a dry, fine-meshed sieve to remove any large pieces of rice.
Pulverize the remaining 1 cup of rice as outlined in Step 3.
Tips & Warnings
- If you grind rice in a coffee grinder that you also grind coffee in, your rice powder may absorb residual coffee oils from the grinder. Consider purchasing a separate coffee grinder to grind rice.
