How to Turn Off Auto Arrange in Windows 7

Windows 7 comes with "Auto arrange," a feature that shuffles desktop icons and arranges them automatically. When it is enabled, Windows 7 forces an automatic sort when you add icons to the desktop. It groups icons automatically. If you prefer to move the icons wherever you want, turn off this feature. Turning off "Auto arrange" is a quick and simple process that does not interfere with your computer.

  • Right-click an empty part of the desktop, then click "View" to display the submenu. You should see a check mark next to the "Auto arrange icons" option.

  • Click the "Auto arrange icons" option. The check mark will be removed automatically and "Auto arrange" will be disabled.

  • Drag the icons on your desktop to arrange them the way you want.
