How to Transfer Nikon Files to a Mac Computer

Save

The Mac OS X operating system is known for easily recognizing devices and having built-in drivers, including Nikon digital cameras. Nikon provides image transfer software for Mac OS X in the box when you buy a digital camera, but you can also use Image Capture to transfer images and files. A benefit of using Image Capture is that you do not need to update software or drivers to work with specific Nikon camera models.

  • Turn on your Nikon camera. Connect it to your Mac using the cord that came with it. If iPhoto opens automatically, close it.

  • Click the Finder icon in your Dock to open a new finder window. Click the "Applications" folder shortcut in the left column of the Finder window.

  • Locate Image Capture. Double-click the icon to open the application. You can also use the keyboard shortcut "Command" and "O" to open applications and documents.

  • Allow Image Capture several minutes to recognize your camera and load the files. This may take longer if you have a large number of files or files that are large. If Image Capture does not recognize your camera, turn your camera off and turn it back on again.

  • Click the tab next to "Download To" and select a destination to save your files. Your most-recent and most-used folders will automatically display as destination options. Select "Other" from the drop-down menu to browse your entire Mac for a destination.

  • Click the "Download All" button to automatically download the entire contents of your Nikon camera to your Mac. Click the "Download Some" if you want to choose the photos to download. Click the desired photos to select. Click the "Download" button. Image capture will automatically open the destination folder where you saved your images after download.

Tips & Warnings

  • Click the "Options" button to access download settings for your Nikon camera, such as deleting files after transfers, embedding ColorSync profiles and automatic downloading upon connection.
  • If you want to set Image Capture as the default application when you connect your Nikon camera, select "Image Capture" form the top menu bar, then select "Preferences." Click the tab next to "When a camera is connected, open" and select Image Capture. Close the "Preferences" window to save your changes.
