How to Sew a Bustle
There are a variety of bustles to choose from when altering your wedding gown: ballroom, tuft, French, Austrian or pick-up bustle to name a few. For beginners, a basic bustle works on just about any wedding gown style and can be done within an hour. Ask your maid of honor for some help, wear the wedding day shoes and get in front of a full-length mirror to create a basic bustle that will lift your gown off the floor in back for more comfort after the wedding ceremony. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Mark two places on the center of the back seam of the dress. This is where two buttons are placed at the middle of the skirt for attaching the bustle.
-
2
With the dress on, have the maid of honor pin the middle of the skirt to the marks made. Play around with the hem lengths to see your preference for bustle placement. Wear the shoes you will be wearing on the wedding day. When you determine placement, pin the dress so the bustle is up.

-
3
Remove the dress and place on a hanger or dress form.
-
4
Unpin the skirt from the bodice but do not remove the pins. Use the pins as a marker.
-
5
Make the marked areas level and create two bustle points for the buttons.
-
6
Take the pins from the middle of the skirt and pin up to your button points. Play around with the draping of the dress and the placement of the pins before you sew the buttons on.
-
7
Sew the buttons on the points.
-
8
Sew loops using thin ribbon on the outside of the skirt where you placed your markers.
-
9
Pull the loops up and attach to the buttons for your bustle.
