How to Find the WINS Server in XP

How to Find the WINS Server in XP thumbnail
A WINS server can help decrease Windows name resolution network broadcast traffic.

WINS servers help with network administration by providing a central location where Windows-based computers can resolve Windows computer names to IP addresses when accessing resources. To configure Windows client computers with static IP addressing for a network that has a WINS server, you need to know the IP address of the WINS server. Use the "ipconfig" command line networking tool on a Windows XP computer that is already configured and working on the network to find the WINS server IP address.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" button on the Windows XP PC desktop taskbar and then click "All Programs" and click "Accessories."

    • 2

Click the command line icon in the menu that appears. The command line window will display.

    • 3

Type "ipconfig /all" on the command prompt. Tap the "Enter" key. Note the IP address listed beside the "WINS" entry in the command line output.
