How to Become an MI6 Agent

The Secret Intelligence Service, commonly known as MI6, is the United Kingdom's foreign intelligence service. Although many people are familiar with the organization as it has been represented in the James Bond books and films, less is known about the highly secretive organization in reality. For British citizens who are looking for a challenging career in the service of Her Majesty's Government, being an MI6 agent is an excellent option.

  • Review the MI6 website to learn about the roles they hire agents for. MI6 recruits agents to work as operational officers, administrators, technologists, language specialists, trades and services experts, and for corporate positions.

  • Familiarize yourself with the requirements for becoming an MI6 agent. You must be a British citizen and if you hold dual citizenship, you must renounce any other citizenship. You must be able to pass a security clearance. You must pass mandatory drug tests and be free of any UK class A drugs for the previous 12 months and UK class B/C drugs for the previous six months.

  • Complete the online application form available on the MI6 website. This application will include your personal details such as your name and contact information, details about your education and qualifications, your work experience, your language skills and a questionnaire about your eligibility.

  • Wait to be contacted by MI6. Because of the sensitivity of their positions, MI6 does not provide details about the hiring process beyond how to apply. If they are interested in you as a candidate, they will contact you. The application process can take between six and nine months to complete. Depending on which agent position you are being considered for, you might need to sit for aptitude tests.

Tips & Warnings

  • You are only allowed to inform your parents, close partner or spouse about your application and only if they are British nationals. Disclosing your application to anyone else may disqualify your application.
