Irish oats can be enjoyed by themselves, or as part of a bigger breakfast.

Irish oats can be a versatile ingredient, allowing for fiber-rich oatmeal cookies and more. Most commonly, it is used as a warm breakfast cereal that will provide a sizable portion of the recommended daily dose of fiber. Yet, Irish oats should not be confused with the sugar-filled oatmeal packets often available in supermarkets. While they are relatively simple to cook, there is a lengthy prep time involved if making them the traditional way. They also can be prepared easily in a microwave. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring cup
  • 4 pint bowl
  • Saucepan

Instructions

  1. Microwave

      Measure out a 1/4 cup of Irish oats and pour them into a 4 pint bowl. The bowl you use needs to be deep, because like rice and other grains, oats will significantly expand once they cook.

      Measure out 3/4 cup of water, and pour this water into the bowl.

      Place the bowl of Irish oats and water into the microwave.

      Put the microwave onto the highest setting and cook for five minutes.

      Stir the oats, then return it to the microwave for three more minutes.

      Set the oats sit for a few minutes, depending on your temperature preference.

    Overnight Preparation

      Add 4 cups of water to a saucepan.

      Add 1 cup of Irish oats.

      Allow the water to come to a boil, and then simmer the oats for a full minute.

      Remove the pot from the stove. Place in the refrigerator overnight.

      Cook an additional nine to twelve minutes on the stovetop the very next morning.

Tips & Warnings

  • Depending on your preference, the oats can be supplemented with butter, milk, sugar, cinnamon and other ingredients.
