How to Increase the Size of a VMware Disk

VMware is a virtualization program that lets you install and run multiple operating systems within the software. When you create a virtual machine, VMware creates a hard disk that contains the virtual machine's operating system and its files. It also asks you to choose the amount of hard disk space you want to use during the setup process. If you need additional disk space for your virtual machine, you can expand the hard drive to add more space.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch VMware and power off the virtual machine whose disk size you wish to increase. Click the "Edit Virtual Machine Settings" link under "Commands" on your virtual machine's tab.

    • 2

Click your "Hard Disk" on the "Hardware" tab. Click the "Utilities" button on the right side of the window and select "Expand."

    • 3

Type the size you want to use for the VMware disk next to "Maximum Disk Size (GB)" and click "Expand." Click "OK" when VMware finishes increasing the disk size.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although expanding a disk increases its maximum size, you will need to adjust your partition size within your operating system to take advantage of the additional space.
